Principal Technician (Agricultural Engineering)

Job Description

The incumbent will be in charge of and responsible for the management, safety, organisation,maintenance and operation of the Ukulinga workshop facility which consists of an electronicworkshop, a mechanical workshop, an engine test facility, agricultural equipment and teachingand research laboratories. S/he is required to organise and run a workshop practice course andfield and laboratory-based practicals for undergraduate students. Manage and assist with thedesign and development of teaching and research equipment for both postgraduate researchand undergraduate engineering (field, laboratory practicals and design projects). S/he isresponsible for and required to be the safety representative for all safety issues described in theOSH Act related to workshops. S/he will be required to supervise other staff in the workshop. S/hewill also be expected to be proficient in three or more of the these areas of expertise i.e Hydraulicsand Pneumatics, Steel fabrication, Various forms of welding including (Mig, tig, arc and gas),Electrical, Electronic, Diesel Engines and transmission trains

Responsibilities + Skills

Experience in electrical and electronic applicationsA valid drivers license


Matric plus relevant 3 year qualification or N4/Higher technical certificate with arelevant recognised Trade test


Five (5) years relevant experience of which two (2) must at a senior levelExperience in working with workshop equipment and tools including: Lathes, Milling
