Principal Technician (Instrumentation) (Peromnes Grade 8)

Job Description

The School of Life Sciences on the Pietermaritzburg campus operates several teachingand research laboratories. The School seeks to appoint a Principal Technician tomanage and provide specialist technical support for the School’s pool of analyticalequipment as well as general technical support for the School. S/he will oversee thefunctioning of the research laboratories, maintenance of laboratory equipment andthe specialist training of staff and postgraduate students. A sound knowledge ofadvanced scientific equipment including HPLC, GC/MS as well as experience inBiological Science environment and with protein crystallographer are essential.The incumbent will be responsible for the line management and development ofassociated technical staff. S/he must be able to advise on the purchasing of newequipment and will be responsible for maintaining the asset register. S/he will ensurethat proper health and safety requirements are maintained in the School and co-ordinate the disposal of toxic waste. The incumbent will supervise laboratory staff aswell as perform administrative functions and other duties based on the operationalneeds of the School as determined by management.

A relevant Honours degree in Life Sciences or related fieldFive years relevant work experience, of which two years should be at the seniorlevel, inclusive of experiential training gained during post graduate studies.
